Oil portraits

Oil portraits

Why an oil portrait painting?

What makes an oil painting so special, so appealing? To answer to this in words is not easy. After all, a painting engages with our emotions and feelings. It pulls you in so that each time you look at it, you see something new, something different. The brushstrokes and pigments change tone and hue as the light falls on it. Everything about a portrait captures a life. It's an illusion that almost breathes. As an artist, I have always been fascinated by portraits.

It starts by getting in touch. Tell me about the person you wish to portray. Is it a family member or colleague? What are they like? Is it for an occasion? What's the story? You might have a vague idea of what you want or a clear one, either way, it's a collaborative journey. As the artist, I will realise the best possible image, while my skills will create something truly special.

My main method of working is from photographs, which I capture over one or two sittings. I can, however work from supplied pictures if necessary. I am happy to travel to your location (wherever that may be) though the painting itself is made back in my London studio. Completion typically takes between one to three months, depending on size and complexity.

I use only professional, artist-grade materials: the best lightfast oil paints and the finest linen canvas, to ensure you have a painting of lasting longevity.

Email or fill out the contact form below to start the conversation. I am more than happy to answer any questions you may have. Portraits are exciting and fun to do, so get in touch now, I am very friendly and love a good story.

Self - Oil on canvas - 60 x 50cm

About me

I was born in Montreal, Canada to an Irish family. I grew up in London where I studied Fine Art at Chelsea School of Art and  Goldsmiths College, University of London. After leaving college my work focused on conceptual and performance art. I have been included in numerous Royal Academy Summer Exhibitions, as well as shows at Riverside Studio, Christies and MK Gallery, Milton Keynes.

I returned to my passion for painting a few years ago and have since become known for my realist style. My aim isn't to paint every single hair, but rather to achieve a softness in the final result. I'd describe my painting approach as "very tight," perhaps more like a classical style with a contemporary feel.
